Users can choose to keep the Gingerbread operating system, or, using Sony PC Companion or Bridge for Mac, they could upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich; however, downgrading to Gingerbread is not officially supported.
The Xperia U is fully Facebook integrated and features Sony's Timescape UI.
We've got mixed news for those who were wondering just where Sony's Jelly Bean updates were headed. Sony has narrowed down its upgrade schedule for the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V to the middle of 2013's first quarter, or roughly February.
It is connected to the Sony Entertainment Network, allowing users to access Music & Video Unlimited in some parts of the world. On 17 December 2012, Sony confirmed that the Xperia U will not be updated to Android Jelly Bean 4.1 due to hardware incompatibility.
Sony later reported that the Xperia U was not updated due to the lack of RAM.
Sony appears to have learned a lesson from its upgrade process last year, given the forthcoming plans and this added apology in the blog post: “On that note, thank you for all the feedback on our Jelly Bean 4.1 rollout for Xperia 2012 products – we’re aware the process hasn’t been as succinct or as timely as you might’ve expected.
As part of Developer World’s piece, Fredrik Ekstrand, our Head of Software Product Management, elaborates on some of the reasons for this, but essentially – we’ve heard your frustrations and are constantly improving the way we do things.“ We often focus on network carriers as a stumbling block when it comes to device software upgrades, which they can be.
The phone uses a removable "BA600" Sony battery which has 1290 m Ah.
The Xperia U was released with Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, but, on 28 September 2012, Sony released an update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. There are no details on which older handsets are part of that plan. However, if a Sony Xperia phone launched with Android 4.1, I think there’s a reasonably good chance it will see the upgrade; there’s no major hardware bump needed for the latest version of Jelly Bean outside of support for Bluetooth 4.0.The camera has 5 megapixels and is capable of recording video at 720p High Definition. The device features a STE Nova Thor U8500 1 GHz dual core processor, 512 MB RAM(split into 392MB system memory and 120MB for the GPU), Mali-400 GPU, 8 GB of internal storage (4 GB of which is available to the user) and a micro-USB connector with USB-OTG support. An illumination bar at the bottom of the phone can change color to adapt to the color rendered in the screen while using the album and walkman apps; third-party apps can be downloaded to change the colour. But the handset makers have to actually create software updates for carriers to test and push out, so it’s nice to see Sony stand up and take a little responsibility here.
